A wonder goal by Papiss Cisse has capped an impressive first-half display for Newcastle United.
The Magpies fell behind to Southampton after just three minutes, but they responded to lead 2-1 at the break.
Morgan Schneiderlin volleyed home to give the Saints the lead from Rickie Lambert's knock-down, as the visitors started brightly.
Newcastle responded well to their early setback and Moussa Sissoko almost levelled midway through the opening period, but his low deflected effort was tipped around the post by Artur Boruc.
Sissoko did have the ball in the net on 33 minutes, when he tapped home from close range after Yoan Gouffran's low shot had been parried by Boruc.
Newcastle were ahead on 43 minutes. A long punt forward by replacement goalkeeper Rob Elliot was missed by Luke Shaw and the ball fell to Cisse, who unleashed a thumping volley that looped over the head of Boruc from 30 yards.
The half ended on a sour note for Newcastle, as captain Fabricio Coloccini limped off and was replaced by Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa.
