Newcastle United have appointed former manager Joe Kinnear as a director of football on a three-year deal.

Reports suggested on Sunday afternoon that the 66-year-old would be returning to St James' Park in a more senior role.

Kinnear took charge of the Magpies in 2008 before leaving one year later due to health problems.

When asked what his responsibilities would be, he told Sky Sports News: "In charge of transfers and looking at the strengths and weaknesses of the squad and helping out [manager] Alan Pardew in any way I can.

"I'm director of football, he's the manager. I'm not picking the team - I'm there solely to ensure he gets the best players on the pitch."

Kinnear also confirmed that he was feeling healthy following his heart surgery in 2009.

"I'm fit as a fiddle now," he added. "I've been working out in the gym - I'm in best physical shape I've ever been in."

Newcastle finished last season in 16th place in the Premier League table.
