A Mexican sports group came close to buying Newcastle United from Mike Ashley during the summer, according to a report.

A Mexican sports group have revealed that they came close to buying Newcastle United from Mike Ashley during the summer.

Orlegi Sports were believed to have spent time attempting to broker a deal with the Magpies in the last few months, with group frontman Alejandro Irarragorri worth a reported $450m (£365m).

Speaking to ESPN, Irarragorri said: "We were completely looking towards Europe.

"Last year, we were very close to achieving a purchase in the Premier League".

That Premier League club was revealed to be the Toon by the Newcastle Chronicle earlier this year, with Orlegi then going on to purchase Atlas, who currently sit ninth in the Liga MX table after 12 games of the Apertura.

Newcastle have been the subject of multiple bids in recent months, with the latest coming from a consortium led by former Manchester United and Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon.
