Alan Pardew says that he was 'in shock' when Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley offered him a new eight-year deal at the club.

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew has revealed that he was 'shocked' to be offered an eight-year contract at the Sports Direct Arena.

The former Southampton boss put pen to paper on the long-term deal yesterday after owner Mike Ashley expressed his desire for longevity at the North East club.

"When it was first suggested to me by Mike, I was in a bit of shock myself," the Shields Gazette quotes Pardew as saying.

"Trying to foresee what will happen in the next eight years is difficult. But this is probably the best chance I've got of winning a trophy and that's what I want to do. I've got a great opportunity to do that at this club."

Pardew's coaching staff including John Carver, Steve Stone and Andy Woodman were all offered eight-year deals.
