Newcastle United striker Papiss Cisse insists that he should not be compared to Magpies legend Alan Shearer despite the assertions of Toon boss Alan Pardew.

Newcastle United striker Papiss Cisse has declared that he does not feel worthy of comparisons to Toon legend Alan Shearer.

Magpies boss Alan Pardew insisted that Cisse's looping volley against Southampton last weekend reminded him of Shearer's famous strike against Everton a decade ago.

Cisse has admitted that he is flattered to be mentioned in the same breath as Shearer, but is focused on finding a consistent run of form between now and the end of the season.

He told The Sun: "I haven't scored too many goals this year. It's difficult for me sometimes but maybe it's coming. After the ball came to me, in my head I just thought 'shoot'. I knew it was a goal. It was a nice feeling, I'm happy. But it is not magic.

"I have seen Alan Shearer's goal against Everton on TV. It does not come into my mind. Shearer is the big man. I'm not Alan, I try sometimes but Alan is the big man.

"I have never met him. But all of the time I see him on TV he talks well about me when I play good."

The 27-year-old's seventh goal of the season helped Newcastle earn a crucial 4-2 win over Saints in their battle to beat the drop.
