Siem de Jong: 'Newcastle United must strengthen'

Newcastle United forward Siem de Jong hopes that the club will strengthen the squad this summer.

Newcastle United forward Siem de Jong has stated that the club must strengthen their squad this summer following a disappointing season.

The Magpies are not yet assured of Premier League safety following a run of seven defeats in a row, which has led to questions being asked about head coach John Carver and the club's hierarchy.

With a new boss expected to come in over the summer, De Jong has hinted that he would like to see owner Mike Ashley give the new man plenty of backing in the transfer market.

"I want a totally different season for me and the team next year. The team will change over the summer with some players leaving and new ones coming in," the Dutchman told The Mirror.

"We need to strengthen and everybody knows that. I want to forget about this year and show that I can be a big player for Newcastle."

Newcastle are 14th in the table with four games remaining.
