Newcastle United have reportedly submitted an improved bid for £15m-rated Queens Park Rangers striker Charlie Austin.
The 26-year-old is expected to remain in the Premier League after his 18 goals were not enough to keep QPR in the top flight last season.
The Magpies are thought to be leading the way for the England international's signature, having been reportedly knocked back already earlier this month.
Rangers are said to be holding out for at least £15m, but United have returned with another offer closer to that valuation, according to ESPN.
Speculation is rife that the impasse in negotiations has opened the door for West Ham United to enter the fold.
Austin's contract at Loftus Road expires next summer.
