Former Burnley defender Clarke Carlisle is in hospital after being hit by a lorry on Monday morning.

The 35-year-old was airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary with life-threatening injuries after the incident that took place near Bishopthorpe in North Yorkshire.

The cause of the accident is unknown and North Yorkshire Police have only confirmed that a 35-year-old man was struck by a lorry on the A64 South of York.

A tweet from the Football Association this evening read: "The thoughts and prayers of all at the FA are with Clarke Carlisle and his family at this sad time."
