FIFA corruption trial 'could begin in September or October 2017'

A US judge reveals that a trial into the corruption allegations involving FIFA could be held in September or October next year.

A US judge has claimed that a trial into the alleged widespread corruption within FIFA could begin in September or October next year.

In total, 42 individuals have been charged in relation to the case, while former president Sepp Blatter is serving a six-year ban from all football activity.

The 80-year-old is alleged to have made a "disloyal" £1.3m payment to UEFA president Michel Platini, who is also serving a six-year suspension.

Today, district judge Raymond Dearie told a hearing that a trial could begin in around 13 months' time, according to Reuters.

Assistant US attorney Evan Norris told the judge that the government does not currently expect to bring additional charges, but could not rule out charging more defendants.
