Argentina legend Diego Maradona 'to run for FIFA presidency'

Argentina legend Diego Maradona reportedly intends to run for the FIFA presidency following Sepp Blatter's decision to step down.

Argentina football legend Diego Maradona reportedly intends to run for the FIFA presidency.

A new leader is expected to be elected before the New Year after current president Sepp Blatter announced plans to step down amid the ongoing corruption scandal.

Now, it has emerged that Maradona, who won the World Cup with Argentina in 1986, wants to take on the leadership role of football's world governing body.

Victor Hugo Morales, who is the host of teleSUR's De Chilena! show, said: "Diego will be candidate for FIFA [presidency], with all the authority he has, he has been in the front line fighting from that world of players.

"Diego has been a spearhead to talk about corruption inside FIFA, and corruption within the AFA (Argentine Football Association)."

In May, Maradona admitted that he was "enjoying" the latest scandal to hit FIFA and urged the governing body to stop "lying".
