Parma beat Napoli to keep pressure on top five

Parma record a valuable 1-0 win over Napoli in Serie A this evening to keep the pressure on the top five.

Parma edged to a 1-0 win over Napoli in Serie A this evening, drawing level on points with fifth-placed Inter Milan in the table.

Jonathan Biabiany had the first shot of the match in the sixth minute but was unable to make the most of the opportunity as he dragged a poor effort well wide.

Gokhan Inler and Gabriel Paletta also missed the target by some distance in a first half that lacked any clear chances or discernable quality.

There was finally some goalmouth action in the 54th minute as Lorenzo Insigne made his way past a number of tackles before letting fly from just outside the box, drawing a good save from Antonio Mirante.

The hosts were ahead just one minute later, however, as Mattia Cassani's pass found Marco Parolo, who picked out the top corner with a fine strike from the edge of the box.

The visitors had a decent chance to level things up with just over 20 minutes remaining in the match, but Gonzalo Higuain could not steer the ball on target from close range.

They came even closer to an equaliser in the 83rd minute when Insigne latched on to a cross inside the box, only to send his effort narrowly wide of the post.

Duvan Zapata also threatened with two headers late on, but the visitors were unable to find a goal and were forced to settle for a defeat that leaves them 12 points behind second-placed Roma.
