It was the hosts who managed to fashion the game's first shot at goal as Jonathan Biabiany's tame effort flew wide of the mark on six minutes.

Roberto Donadoni's men enjoyed a wealth of possession but struggled in their attempts to get beyond the Partenopei back four regularly in what proved an insipid first half.

Nevertheless, Gabriel Paletta spurned a half-chance to open the scoring by firing over the bar from inside the area just before the interval as both sides cancelled each other out.
