Graham Westley forced to defend style of play

Graham Westley insists that "a lot of what is said and written about me are myths" after some supporters questioned his Peterborough United appointment.

Graham Westley has admitted that he is looking to dispel a few "myths" after being appointed Peterborough United manager.

The 47-year-old takes over from Dave Robertson at London Road, with the Posh currently hovering at the wrong end of the table.

Westley has already been the subject of criticism from certain sections, who claim that the former Stevenage boss is more suited to playing a bland style of football.

However, the Englishman claims that those suggestions are some way wide of the mark, telling reporters: "Anyone who watched my teams closely and regularly will know that they are encouraged to play in the right way.

"But sometimes you have to play to suit the players in your squad. At Stevenage I didn't have centre-backs who were comfortable in possession. I had a goalkeeper with a bad ankle who couldn't play as a sweeper-keeper.

"But, believe me, my education in football was all about passing and possession. I was at QPR when Terry Venables was the manager. He used to pick players with technical ability and he used to pick me. A lot of what is said and written about me are myths."

Westley took Stevenage from non-league to League One in his second stint at the club.
