Ally McCoist open to Rangers return

Ally McCoist reveals that he would be open to speaking to Rangers about a potential return to the dugout at Ibrox.

Rangers legend Ally McCoist has revealed that he would not turn down an opportunity to hold discussions over the vacant managerial position at Ibrox.

On Thursday, Rangers announced that Pedro Caixinha had been sacked after just seven months in charge, and McCoist has been one of the names suggested as a replacement after a successful period as manager between 2011 and 2014.

The former striker has admitted that he does not realistically expect to be considered for the role, but acknowledged that he would do anything he can to help Rangers start to bridge the gap on Old Firm rivals Celtic.

The 55-year-old told talkSPORT: "I think we're maybe getting a wee bit ahead of ourselves, but listen, it's my club and you never turn your back on your club.

"It's my team, it's the only team I've ever supported, I played for them for 15 years, I was lucky enough to be assistant there under Walter [Smith] and it was the greatest privilege of my life to manage the club. Of course I'd speak to them, but that said it's so important that we get the right man in charge.

"We need to get somebody in charge who cares about the club and knows the club, knows Scottish football and has a positive plan, and whoever that is will need to be backed and supported."

During his previous stint in charge, McCoist won 119 of 164 games, taking the club from the fourth tier to the Scottish Championship.
