David Weir talks up competition for places at Rangers ahead of new season

Rangers number two David Weir insists that there is plenty of competition for places at the club ahead of the new Scottish Championship campaign.

Rangers assistant manager David Weir has talked up the competition for places at the club as they look to regain a place in the Scottish Premiership next season.

The club failed to bring top-flight football back to Ibrox as they were defeated in the playoffs by Motherwell earlier this year, but Weir has insisted that the side now has a strong defensive backbone and are seeking to add even more quality to their squad this summer.

"We brought in Danny, Wes and Rob to add to that defensive unit," said Weir, according to The Express.

"We need that and it gives us a level of security and adds to the competition for places with Cammy Bell, Marius and Darren McGregor already there. You need to concentrate on certain areas of the team but we have lost 16 players since the end of last season and three or four have come in.

"There are still a few gaps to fill and we are constantly looking at players we want to bring in. But they have to be right – players who fit this football club and add value to what we already have."

Weir is currently serving as a number two to Rangers boss Mark Warburton.
