Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti 'still does not know' whether Marco Asensio will be signing a new contract at the club.

Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti has admitted that he 'still does not know' whether Marco Asensio will be signing a new contract with the Spanish and European champions.

The Spain international's current deal at Bernabeu is due to expire at the end of June, and there remains a host of speculation surrounding his future in the Spanish capital.

Asensio has been a regular for Los Blancos this season, featuring on 28 occasions in all competitions, scoring five goals and registering five assists in the process.

The 27-year-old has scored in two of Real Madrid's last three La Liga matches, including the opener in Wednesday's 4-0 victory over Elche.

Ancelotti was asked about the attacker during his post-match press conference and admitted that there is still huge uncertainty surrounding his future at Bernabeu.

"He is looking sharp. I don't yet know if he's going to stay or not. He has a contract and I'm not overly concerned because we have some very important challenges this season and he is contributing," Ancelotti told reporters on Wednesday night.

"He will make the right decision together with the club."

As it stands, Asensio is free to sign a pre-contract with a foreign club, and there is believed to be interest from both the Premier League and Serie A.

The Spaniard, who was heavily linked with a summer exit, arrived at Real Madrid from Mallorca in 2014, and he has represented the club on 262 occasions, scoring 53 goals and contributing 29 assists.

Ancelotti also commented on the fixture with Elche, with the result allowing Real Madrid to move to within eight points of La Liga leaders Barcelona.

"Every game and instants within them are good to build your confidence. Each moment can affect the atmosphere slightly," said the Italian.

"When you're 3-0 up you relax a bit and that can cause problems, I don't want to see it. We're feeling better and it's important to keep up this good run.

"We're taking advantage of all these games to improve each player's fitness. It's obvious the team is getting better and playing matches helps you to fine-tune their condition. There's no other way to do it.

"I rested guys who played in the final and I wanted to bring fresh legs into the middle of the park. Nothing special. [Eduardo] Camavinga is in better shape because [Aurelien] Tchouameni is just on his way back. Tchouameni will play in Pamplona."

Real Madrid will have the chance to move to within five points of Barcelona on Saturday, with Los Blancos continuing their league campaign away to Osasuna.
