Shay Given wants Giovanni Trapattoni to resign as Republic of Ireland manager

Shay Given, Ireland's second-most capped player, says that it is time for a change at the helm of the nation's football team.

Shay Given, the Republic of Ireland's second-most capped player, has called for Giovanni Trapattoni to resign as manager of the national team.

The Italian coach's position is believed to be unstable after Friday's defeat at home to Sweden left their hopes of qualifying for next year's World Cup hanging by a thread.

If Ireland fail to win in Austria this evening, reports claim that Trapattoni could be sacked, and goalkeeper Given would be happy to see a change.

Given, who has 125 caps for his country, told talkSPORT: "I just think people are looking for a change, they want someone new in with fresh ideas.

"It's time for someone else to take the reins and hopefully lead us to the next European Championship.

"One of the only things is the language barrier. Sometimes it's difficult for him to get his point across with his lack of English."

Heading into tonight's game in Vienna, Ireland are eight points adrift of runaway Group C leaders Germany, three behind Sweden and level with opponents Austria on 11 points.
