Jay Tabb has given Ipswich Town a 1-0 lead over Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.
It took seven minutes for the game's first chance, when an Ipswich corner forced Danny Pugh to clear the ball off the line at the far post following a Tommy Smith header.
It was the visitors who went ahead in the 14th minute, when Carlos Edwards's long throw hit Tabb on the knee before looping over the head of Chris Kirkland and in for the opener.
Town nearly doubled their lead just three minutes later, but Luke Hyam's volley was saved by Kirkland.
Wednesday finally created a chance through Seyi Olofinjana in the 22nd minute, but his cross was glanced wide by Jermaine Johnson.
The home side made two separate substitutions midway through the first half. First Kieran Lee was the victim of a tacical swap as he was replaced by Steve Howard, before injury forced Johnson to be swapped for Chris Maguire.
