Goals from Lucas Joao, Jose Semedo, Kieran Lee and Modou Sougou gave Sheffield Wednesday a comfortable 4-1 win over Mansfield Town at Hillsborough in the first round of the Capital One Cup this evening.
The Owls took the lead early on when Alex Lopez's cross found Portuguese forward Joao, who powerfully headed home on his full debut.
Fellow new boy Sougou then curled a cross onto the head of Semedo, who calmly doubled his side's lead from close range.
Joao had another good chance to put the tie to bed when he connected with Lee's cross, but he could only power his header over the top of goal.
Mansfield then made their hosts pay for their wasteful finishing when Ryan Tafazolli reduced the deficit in first-half injury time.
However, Wednesday restored their two-goal lead when Joao teed up Lee, who fired home shortly after the restart.
Marco Matias volleyed narrowly wide as the hosts continued to dominate, and Sougou put the icing on a fantastic evening for Carlos Carvalhal when he hammered home Jeremy Helan's cut-back late on.
