Ronald Koeman blames bad luck for Europa League exit

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman believes that his side were cursed with bad luck in both Europa League games against FC Midtjylland.

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman has claimed that bad luck proved his side's undoing as they were knocked out of the Europa League on Thursday.

The Saints succumbed to a 1-0 defeat away at FC Midtjylland in their playoff round second leg, which confirmed a 2-1 defeat on aggregate after they were held to a first-leg 1-1 draw at St Mary's.

Koeman told BT Sport: "We were unlucky. In both games we were the better team, we had the most chances. We scored a goal at home that was disallowed and tonight we need a penalty for a handball from the free kick.

"Maybe it was the best performance until now, from our team. We worked very hard but sometimes you need good decisions. We didn't have that. In my opinion that makes the result."

Southampton's next fixture is at home to Norwich City in the Premier League on Sunday, August 30.
