Jose Fonte: 'Southampton strikers need to do more'

Southampton defender Jose Fonte says that the team's attacking quantities need to do more if the club are to qualify for the Champions League.

Jose Fonte has said that Southampton's attacking players need to start pulling their weight as the race for Champions League qualification hots up.

The Saints missed the chance to move third in the Premier League table on Sunday after losing 2-0 to top-four rivals Liverpool at St Mary's in a defeat that saw them drop to fifth.

Ronald Koeman's side have only scored once in their last four league outings, with top goalscorer Graziano Pelle netting just one goal since December.

"Obviously, we haven't scored many goals. Things are not clicking when we're attacking in last third of the pitch so we need to work on that," the centre-back is quoted as saying by the Daily Star.

"We're still in the mix. It's a long way until the end. There's another 12 games, so a lot of points to play for.

"We won't put our heads down and let ourselves go. We're going to keep working on the training ground and try and put this right."

Southampton travel away to West Bromwich Albion this Saturday.
