Sacked Southend boss Paul Sturrock declines offer to lead team

Paul Sturrock declines Southend United's offer of leading the team out against Crewe at Wembley following his sacking last week.

Recently-sacked Southend manager Paul Sturrock has declined the chance to lead out his former side in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy final at Wembley.

There were suggestions that the 56-year-old would manage the side against Crewe Alexandra on April 17, despite getting dismissed by the League Two outfit last Sunday.

The club's official Twitter account released a message, which said: "Paul Sturrock has announced he has politely declined the chairman's offer for him to manage the team at Wembley.

"Paul will travel with the supporters to the game and sit in amongst the fans. He says he is looking forward to a few beers with you all."

Former Preston boss Phil Brown was appointed as Sturrock's successor on Monday.
