Belgium manager Roberto Martinez has emerged as a surprise candidate to become the next permanent boss of Spain.

According to The Mirror, the former Everton head coach is on the shortlist to replace Julen Lopetegui, who was sacked on the eve of the World Cup finals.

Martinez has impressed in charge of Belgium, having guided the Red Devils through the group stage in Russia with a 100% record.

Fernando Hierro is overseeing Spain's World Cup campaign, stepping up from his role as technical director, but the report suggests that the Spanish FA is seeking a more experienced coach to lead the team in the long term.

Martinez signed a two-year contract extension to remain as Belgium boss ahead of the tournament.
