Chelsea and Spain midfielder Juan Mata backs England to challenge for Euro 2012 glory.

Chelsea and Spain midfielder Juan Mata has expressed his belief that England will be challengers in the upcoming European Championships.

Mata, 24, is part of a Spain squad that go into the tournament as favourites and defending champions.

However, the Chelsea man believes that England's determination and desire will make them serious contenders to end the Spain's reign over European football.

"I don't know whether the change of manager for England will affect the team. People say Hodgson's system is different to Capello. But the key is how the players will adapt," Mata said.

"For me, England will always be on the list of candidates for the title. They have a great history and also the players are at a great level. England's strengths are the quality of players and the physical strengths in the team. They always fight for the ball. The desire is sensational.

"Everyone says Spain, Germany and Holland are favourites for the title. But I wouldn't discount England or France, especially if they do well in the first phase."

Mata will be hoping to play a big part in Spain's Euro 2012 campaign after a double-winning season with Chelsea, but he faces stiff competition for a starting place.
