Following a quiet opening, the deadlock was nearly broken in spectacular style on 14 minutes when Moussa Dembele's swerving effort came back off the crossbar.

Spurs were on the attack again soon after, but Roberto Soldado could only flick the ball wide of the post from Gylfi Sigurdsson's cross.

The home side's first chance of the match came with 29 minutes on the clock as Aaron Wilbraham's tame header was easily saved by Hugo Lloris.

However, the visitors continued to carve out the better opportunities and had another 10 minutes before the break when Sigurdsson's shot was tipped over by Julian Speroni.
