Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino: 'Too early for title talk'

Mauricio Pochettino plays down the idea that his team could win the Premier League this season following Steve McClaren's comments that Spurs are contenders.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has played down the idea that his side can win the Premier League title this season.

Following Newcastle United boss Steve McClaren's positive comments during the week, the Argentine insists that it is too early in the league campaign to talk up Spurs' title credentials.

"I respect his opinion and I believe that we have a very strong squad and very good players," Pochettino told reporters, regarding McClaren's statement that the London outfit could challenge for the title.

"After 14 games unbeaten we need to keep on the same level to win every game. But it is too early to start to speak about winning the title. Achievements come at the end of the season. For me, it is too early. We need to keep working hard and show the same winning mentality.

"This is the most important thing because if we start to speak about challenging for objectives at the end of the season then maybe we will be spending energy on things that are not important today. We need to keep our feet on the ground."

Spurs currently sit in fifth position in the league table, while Newcastle occupy 18th.
