Half-Time Report: Eric Dier puts Tottenham Hotspur ahead against Newcastle United

Eric Dier scores shortly before half time to hand Tottenham Hotspur a 1-0 lead over Newcastle United at White Hart Lane.

The home side were pressing from the start as Harry Kane make a run down the left before cutting inside, but his low strike was parried away by Rob Elliot in the Newcastle goal.

Hugo Lloris was also involved in the opening five minutes as Siem de Jong attempted to curl the ball in from a tight angle, but Papiss Cisse accidentally blocked his teammate's shot.

Spurs soon started to take control of the action though, with Christian Eriksen beating Daryl Janmaat before overhitting a cross, while Dele Alli found himself in space in the box, before being let down by his first touch.

Mauricio Pochettino's side continued to see plenty of possession, but had few further chances until Erik Lamela unleashed a curling drive from just outside the box 10 minutes before the interval, but a diving save from Elliot kept it out.

Lamela tested the keeper again a couple of minutes later, forcing another corner which set Dier up to head the ball into the far corner from the Argentine's delivery back into the box, breaking the deadlock.
