Former Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Jamie Redknapp has suggested that England manager Roy Hodgson should consider selecting Eric Dier for his squad.
The 21-year-old - who joined Spurs from Sporting Lisbon in 2014 - has played at right-back, centre-back and in midfield for the club, and Redknapp believes that his versatility could make him an important player for the national team.
Writing for the Daily Mail, Redknapp said: "He is a really intelligent young footballer. He is quick, passes the ball well and knows his limitations - he is happy to do the dirty work and let others take over.
"He has experience of playing in defence but Mauricio Pochettino has been using him in midfield this season and he has been excellent. It is that versatility that makes him such an exciting prospect.
"Hodgson may have looked at him as a defender but now he is forcing himself into contention as a midfielder, because England haven't got too many like him."
Dier has made eight appearances for England Under-21s.
