Danny Rose has told Tottenham Hotspur manager Andre Villas-Boas that he is not prepared to settle for a place on the bench next season.
The England youth international has featured on a regular basis so far this campaign during his loan spell with fellow Premier League side Sunderland.
Having now experienced senior football at the Stadium of Light, Rose has admitted that he is not keen to be a back-up player when he returns to his parent club in the summer.
"I honestly do not know what will happen next season," he told reporters. "I do love Tottenham, they have done a lot for me over the years, I will be forever grateful for the stage I am at now. It's hugely down to them.
"But I am not prepared to go back to sit on the bench and watch other people play football. I've done that enough."
Rose, 22, joined Spurs in 2007 from Leeds United.
