Sevilla confirm Tottenham Hotspur 'willing to pay Federico Fazio clause'

Tottenham appear to be on the verge of signing defender Federico Fazio after Sevilla confirm that the Premier League club are willing to meet his £8m release fee.

Sevilla sporting director Monchi has confirmed that Tottenham Hotspur have agreed to trigger the £8m release clause of their captain Federico Fazio.

Reports emerged earlier this week that Spurs had turned to the Argentine in their search for a new centre-back after missing out on Villarreal's Mateo Musacchio.

Fazio is available on the cheap having negotiated a buy-out fee in a contract that was signed before he led the Spanish outfit to Europa League glory and fifth place in La Liga last season.

Monchi has admitted that Sevilla do not have the financial muscle to persuade the 27-year-old defender to stay and has suggested that his move to White Hart Lane could be completed in the near future.

He told reporters: "It seems that Tottenham is willing to pay the clause. We are waiting to see the money [paid into] the league.

"We are not going to negotiate with anyone. Two months ago we talked about his renewal, but it was not possible.

"When an English team appears interested in one of our players it is difficult because they can multiply player salaries."

Fazio's arrival will pave the way for long-serving defender Michael Dawson to leave Spurs for Hull City, with a deal for the former England international already in place between the two Premier League clubs.
