Jan Vertonghen calls for Tottenham Hotspur to tie down Hugo Lloris to new deal

Jan Vertonghen urges Tottenham Hotspur to tie down goalkeeper Hugo Lloris to a new contract.

Jan Vertonghen has urged Tottenham Hotspur to secure a new deal for goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

The French shot-stopper was reported to have rejected fresh terms in the summer, but his current contract does not expire until 2019.

Eight first-team players penned new deals with the North London outfit in September, and Vertonghen hopes that Lloris is next to commit his future to the club.

In an interview with the London Evening Standard, Vertonghen said: "I hope Hugo is the next one to agree a new deal. It's important to keep this team together, especially quality players like him.

"He is our captain and a very important member of the squad. I don't know what is going on right now [with contract talks] but I hope he will be at Tottenham for many years."

Lloris, who joined Spurs from Lyon in 2012, made a crucial save to deny Javier Hernandez a winning goal for Bayer Leverkusen in Tuesday night's goalless draw in the Champions League group stage.
