Rangers boss Mark Warburton keen to learn from St Johnstone reverse

Mark Warburton reacts to his first defeat as Rangers manager.

Rangers manager Mark Warburton said that he is hoping his players will learn lessons from their 3-1 loss to St Johnstone in the Scottish League Cup.

The former Brentford boss had not tasted defeat as Gers coach prior to the match, but he was keen to draw positives from his side's second-half display.

"We did okay, but in the first half, how many saves did their goalkeeper have to make? Crosses came in, and there were a few scrappy balls and 50-50s, but not enough quality to threaten their keeper," he told the official Rangers website.

"In the second half, we were a lot, lot better but we didn't get the break. If Nathan's header had gone in all of a sudden it would have been 3-2 and a different game – but the fact is it didn't happen so we have to learn from it."

Murray Davidson, Simon Lappin and Michael O'Halloran were on target at Ibrox, helping the Saints book their place in round four. James Tavernier netted a consolation for Rangers just after the hour.
