Dick Advocaat upbeat despite Sunderland loss

Dick Advocaat stays positive after losing his first game in charge of Sunderland against West Ham.

Sunderland manager Dick Advocaat has remained upbeat after losing his first game in charge against West Ham United.

The Black Cats were beaten 1-0 at Upton Park on Saturday as Diafra Sakho's late goal kept them one point above the relegation zone.

Despite seeing his side come away from the capital without any points, Advocaat is satisfied with their efforts during the game.

"I am happy with the effort, we had a discussion about that - how to show our fans what we can do," the Dutchman is quoted as saying by BBC Sport.

"It is hard to play against West Ham with long balls, but we didn't give away of lot chances. They are a good side but I did not expect them to score in the 88th minute."

Sunderland continue their fight for survival on April 5 when they welcome local rivals Newcastle United to the Stadium of Light.
