Sam Allardyce: 'Sunderland did a good job against Newcastle United'

Sunderland manager Sam Allardyce hails his players for their hard work in their 3-0 Premier League win over bitter rivals Newcastle United.

Sunderland manager Sam Allardyce has praised his players for working hard to seal a 3-0 win over local rivals Newcastle United in Sunday's Premier League clash at the Stadium of Light.

Goals from Adam Johnson, Billy Jones and Steven Fletcher helped the Black Cats to their first three-point haul of the season, as well as sealing a sixth consecutive derby win over the Magpies.

Allardyce told BBC Sport after the game: "We've carried that precious piece of history on – the fourth manager to beat Newcastle in their second game as Sunderland boss.

"Everyone's done a job – the players on the pitch and me, tactically setting them out. We had some good fortune for the first goal and we took advantage of it. It's the first good weekend the fans have had this season.

"It's a big victory and we can all look forward to next week. Hopefully this is the start of us getting out of trouble."

Up next for 18th-placed Sunderland is a league trip to Everton on November 1.
