Gus Poyet: Sunderland missed "great opportunity" to beat Liverpool

Sunderland manager Gus Poyet believes that his side missed a "great opportunity" to beat Liverpool at Anfield after holding the Reds to a goalless draw.

Gus Poyet has admitted that Sunderland missed a "great opportunity" to come away from Anfield with a win in the Premier League this afternoon.

The Black Cats shared a goalless draw with Liverpool in a match which saw few chances for either side.

Poyet told BBC Sport: "I think there are times in life when you get opportunities. Today we lost a great opportunity to win at Anfield.

"In terms of defending and keeping a clean sheet we went back to the basics. We need to score more goals and be more clinical. The most important thing is to win and at the moment we cannot win too many."

The result - Sunderland's ninth draw of the season - leaves them 14th in the table, just two points clear of the relegation zone.
