Two goals from Papiss Demba Cisse have helped to keep Newcastle United's Champions League hopes alive with a 2-0 win at Swansea City.

The visitors made the breakthrough after only five minutes when the Senegalese striker collected Yohan Cabaye's clever pass before slotting in past Michel Vorm.

Swansea had huge spells of possession after the opener, but they struggled to create any meaningful chances in front of goal.

Leon Britton could have done better after 20 minutes, but Tim Krul was able to make an easy save to stop the low effort.

The home side's best chance came when Gylfi Sigurdsson's stinging drive from outside of the area was pushed away acrobatically by Krul.

Brendan Rodgers's team were again dominant after half time as Sigurdsson flashed his shot wide. At the other end, Hatem Ben Arfa could only put the ball disappointingly wayward from the angle.

Joe Allen nearly caught out Krul soon after, but the goalkeeper managed to palm away the midfielder's swerving drive.

Despite Swansea's control, Newcastle struck again with 20 minutes to play when Cisse bagged his second of the match courtesy of a curled shot over Vorm and into the net.

Substitute Scott Sinclair tried to get the hosts back into the match with 10 minutes left, but the winger fired wide of the goal on a frustrating day for the Swans.
