Team GB 1-0 Brazil

Stephanie Houghton's early strike hands Team GB all three points against Brazil and top spot in Group E.

Team GB have advanced from Group E as winners after recording a 1-0 victory over Brazil at Wembley.

Great Britain took the lead after just two minutes when Stephanie Houghton evaded the challenge of Andreia before slipping the ball past the goalkeeper.

Brazil so nearly levelled moments later when Cristiane advanced on goal, but she fired her effort wide from outside the box before seeing a shot saved by Karen Bardsley.

Marta was next to come close for Brazil after 14 minutes, while Jill Scott might have met a Kelly Smith pass moments later, but it drifted out of play.

Marta and Cristiane continued to influence the match as the half progressed, with the pair both coming close with 25 minutes on the clock.

Team GB remained a threat, however, and Smith just fired an effort past the post after 30 minutes.

Team GB continued to create chances, and it might have fallen for Scott inside the box, but Erika just managed to block the danger.

Brazil started the second period much the better, and Francielle just fired over the crossbar within two minutes of the restart.

Team GB also came close moments into the second half when Smith headed towards goal, but Andreia was on hand to collect possession.

Team GB were awarded a penalty after 56 minutes when Eniola Aluko was felled in the box by Francielle, but Smith's effort was saved by Andreia.

Marta continued to influence the match for Brazil as the hour-mark approached, but fresh legs provided the home outfit with a threat on the counter.

It was Brazil who pushed for the equaliser in the latter stages, but it remained 1-0, with both teams advancing to the latter stages.

Team GB will face Canada in the quarter-finals on Friday, while Brazil will play world champions Japan.
