Ukraine hire Mikhail Fomenko as manager

Ukraine name former international Mikhail Fomenko as the national team's new manager.

The Ukrainian FA have named former international Mikhail Fomenko as the new manager of the national team.

Fomenko, 64, replaces Oleg Blokhin in the manager's chair after an unsuccessful campaign as co-hosts of Euro 2012 saw the latter resign from the post in September.

A host of managers had been linked with the job, including Sven-Goran Eriksson and Harry Redknapp, as well as former player Andriy Shevchenko.

However, the Football Federation of Ukraine eventually unanimously agreed that former Metalist Kharkiv boss Fomenko was the man for the job.

"I want to thank the board and president of the FFU for their trust. I understand the responsibility entrusted in me and challenges that face the national team of Ukraine," Fomenko told the Federation's official website.

"Our primary objective is to get to the finals of the World Cup in Brazil, and for this we need to take at least second place in our qualifying group."

Fomenko made 212 appearances for Dynamo Kiev during his playing career, and was capped 24 times by his country.
