Nouha Dicko fires Wolverhampton Wanders to victory

Wolverhampton Wanderers edge out Watford 1-0 at Vicarage Road to move within four points of their opponents, who occupy a Championship playoff spot.

Watford's recent revival under Slavisa Jokanovic has come to an end following a 1-0 defeat against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Vicarage Road this evening.

The visitors came close to opening the scoring early on when Bakary Sako crossed the ball in, but Rajiv van la Parra's finish from the edge of the area was just wide.

Heurelho Gomes was called into action shortly after when Van la Parra was involved again, crossing towards Dave Edwards, but his low strike was stopped by the keeper.

The Brazilian continued to come under pressure between the posts in the opening 20 minutes, but the Watford keeper saved shots from Kortney Hause, Van la Parra and Edwards to keep the home side level.

Wolves continued to looks the more likely, with Sako sending in numerous promising passes, but Nouha Dicko blasted wide, while Troy Deeney was flagged offside while trying to force a chance for the hosts late on.

Matej Vydra pounced on Deeney's knockdown for the second half's first real opening, which was well smothered by Carl Ikeme in the end.

It was the visitors who managed to make the breakthrough just minutes later, however, as Van la Parra burst into the opposition box before cutting the ball back for Dicko to fire home.

Watford came within the width of the crossbar of leveling things up 15 minutes from time, with Odion Ighalo's strike from a narrow angle being palmed onto the frame of the goal by Ikeme.

The hosts were unable to build on a short spell of possession, however, and despite a late scare with the ball bouncing around their area, Wolves managed to hold out to claim all three points.

Watford, who had come into this game on the back of three successive wins, remain in the playoff zone, while Wanderers move within four points of their opponents in ninth place.
