Alan Irvine keen to break Saido Berahino reliance

Alan Irvine believes that it is "vitally important" for his West Bromwich Albion team to break their dependency on talisman Saido Berahino.

Alan Irvine has said that it is "vitally important" for West Bromwich Albion not to rest the goalscoring burden on the young shoulders of Saido Berahino.

The 21-year-old striker earned a call-up to the England squad in midweek but drew a blank in this afternoon's 2-0 defeat at home to Newcastle United.

Having struck seven times in the Premier League so far, Berahino has scored more than half of the Baggies' goals, and manager Irvine urges other players to step up when the youngster is having an off day.

"He probably had his poorest game, but people have poor games," Irvine told reporters.

"People will ask the question 'is it as a result of what's just happened to him during the week?' but you can have a poor game at any time. I'd like to think that what happened during the week has given him a massive boost.

"It's vitally important that goals come from throughout your team. We've got players that can score goals, in midfield and so on, there shouldn't be a complete dependency on Saido scoring the goals."

Goals in both halves from Ayoze Perez and Fabricio Coloccini proved enough to beat a West Brom that now sit 13th in the Premier League table.
