Report: West Bromwich Albion turn down chance of permanent Ali Gabr signing

Championship side West Bromwich Albion reportedly opt not to activate their option to sign Egypt defender Ali Gabr permanently from Zamalek.

West Bromwich Albion have reportedly decided not to activate their option to sign Egypt defender Ali Gabr permanently.

The 29-year-old arrived at The Hawthorns on loan from Egyptian outfit Zamalek in the January transfer window, on the same day as Liverpool forward Daniel Sturridge.

However, Gabr did not make a single appearance for the Baggies first team, which crashed out of the Premier League, and only featured twice for the club's Under-23s.

According to the Express & Star, West Brom had to pay Zamalek a loan fee of £438,000 for the centre-back and have the option to secure his services permanently for £1.1m.

The report claims that the Baggies are not convinced about Gabr and have decided not to sign him permanently ahead of the upcoming season.

In addition, Albion are reportedly unable to change their decision because the activation date in the agreement passed this week.

Gabr is currently representing the Pharaohs at the World Cup in Russia.
