Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan has criticised club captain Antolin Alcaraz after he was charged for spitting at Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Richard Stearman.
The 29-year-old was caught by video footage spitting at the Wolves player during the closing stages of Wigan's 3-1 defeat at Molineux.
While the Paraguay international accepted the charge of misconduct, the Premier League side could take additional action against the defender.
"That sort of behaviour has no place in football. It has no place in society," The Sun quotes Whelan as saying.
"It is disgusting, a horrible thing to do and I was shocked. I will back whatever punishment the manager decides to impose.
"I cannot tolerate this sort of thing and it saddens me that a Wigan player is alleged to have done it. It is totally unacceptable."
Alcaraz will serve a three-match suspension.
