Steve Froggatt criticises the Football Association for not handing out a punishment to Wigan Athletic's Callum McManaman.

Former England youth international Steve Froggatt has branded the Football Association "gutless" after they failed to suspend Callum McManaman.

Wigan Athletic winger McManaman had been tipped to receive a suspension for a challenge that he made on Newcastle United defender Massadio Haidara on Sunday afternoon - an incident that was missed by referee Mark Halsey.

However, because one of Halsey's officials saw the tackle, the FA are not able to hand out retrospective punishment.

Having had his career ended by a challenge with Nicky Summerbee in 2000, Froggatt has been highly critical of the way that the governing body have dealt with the matter.

"From someone who lost his career through a bad tackle I find the decision from the FA shameful, embarrassing and above all gutless," he wrote on Twitter.

The 40-year-old represented Aston Villa, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Coventry City during his playing days.
