The Football Association say that they cannot punish Callum McManaman for his tackle on Massadio Haidara.

Wigan Athletic winger Callum McManaman will face no ban for the challenge that he committed on Newcastle United defender Massadio Haidara on Sunday afternoon.

Twenty-one-year-old McManaman had been widely tipped to receive a suspension for the tackle, which left Haidara requiring hospital treatment for a suspected knee ligament injury.

However, despite the fact his actions went unpunished by referee Mark Halsey, the Football Association have confirmed today that the incident was seen by at least one of the officials on duty at the DW Stadium.

"Where one of the officials has seen a coming together of players, no retrospective action should be taken, regardless of whether he or she witnessed the full or particular nature of the challenge. This is to avoid the re-refereeing of incidents," read a statement from the governing body.

"It has been confirmed that at least one of match officials saw the coming together, though not full extent of the challenge. In these circumstances retrospective action cannot be taken."

Meanwhile, a report has claimed that Newcastle may look to claim compensation from Wigan if Haidara is seriously injured.
