Dave Whelan: 'Promotion is Wigan Athletic's top priority'

Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan insists that the club's top priority this season is getting back to the Premier League rather than defending the FA Cup.

Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan has insisted that the club's top priority this season is gaining promotion to the Premier League rather than defending the FA Cup.

The Latics travel to Manchester City in the quarter-finals of the competition on Sunday in what is a repeat of last year's final.

Despite admitting that he is excited by this weekend's tie, Whelan wants the team to focus on getting back to the top flight.

"We are going to go there with intentions of trying to stay in the FA Cup - obviously we will try to retain it - but Manchester City will be looking for their revenge," he told Sky Sports News.

"That said, our number one ambition this season is promotion back to the Premier League. The FA Cup is special, but the main priority for us is the league, the finest league in the world."

Wigan are currently in sixth place in the Championship table.
