Wigan Athletic hit three past fellow playoff hopefuls Reading

Wigan Athletic boost their chances of securing a Championship playoff place by hitting three goals past Reading, who fall out of the top six.

Wigan Athletic have boosted their chances of securing a Championship playoff spot by earning a 3-0 victory over Reading at the DW Stadium.

The Latics dominated the clash in the early stages, and their pressure eventually paid off when Jordi Gomez launched a shot into the back of the net to give Wigan the lead.

Before the half-time interval, the home side gave themselves a two-goal cushion when Martyn Waghorn managed to follow up a saved shot from Callum McManaman.

At the start of the second half, Uwe Rosler's men continued to dominate possession and hampered Reading's defence, which resulted in a third goal for the former Premier League side.

McManaman, who had a early chance to score in the first half, strolled into the penalty area and hammered the ball into the top corner of the net.

Reading were unable to get themselves back into contention, which has now dropped them out of the playoff places, with Brighton moving into sixth on goal difference.
