Wigan Athletic have handed midfielder Darron Gibson a short-term contract following his release by Sunderland earlier this year.
The 30-year-old, who boasts just short of 100 Premier League appearances, was let go by the Black Cats in March after being charged with drink-driving.
Gibson has been given another shot in the Championship with Wigan, however, having done enough during his trial to win over manager Paul Cook.
Speaking to the club's official website, Cook said: "Darron is a talented footballer, who has played at the highest level and is a good addition to our squad."
Gibson has represented Republic of Ireland 27 times and has also previously featured in the semi-finals of the Champions League with Manchester United.
