Wolverhampton Wanderers move top after Tranmere victory

Wolves move top of League One following a comfortable 2-0 victory over Tranmere Rovers at Molineux.

Wolverhampton Wanderers have moved top of League One following a comfortable victory over Tranmere Rovers at Molineux tonight.

Goalkeeper Owain Fon Williams gifted the hosts the lead through Leigh Griffiths, before David Edwards added a second three minutes from the break.

Wolves were trailing Leyton Orient by a point prior to kickoff but, with Russell Slade's men dropping two points in the 2-2 draw with Bristol City, Kenny Jackett's men usurped the Londoners at the summit of England's third tier.

The visitors started the brighter and opened the scoring on 23 minutes in fortuitous circumstances, as Griffiths proved the beneficiary of a Fon Williams howler by watching his effort squirm over the Welsh shot-stopper and trickle over the line.

Jackett's charges should have doubled their advantage soon after, only for Bakary Sako to drag his effort wide of the post following a good cross from Michael Jacobs.

The miss soon proved academic, though, as Sako made amends by delivering an inch-perfect cross for Edwards, whose near-post flick established daylight between the teams on 42 minutes.

Jake Cassidy, who replaced Griffiths at the break, nearly had an immediate impact. The 20-year-old was played through on goal by Kevin Doyle, only to fluff his lines and thrash wide of the mark with only Fon Williams to beat.

Ronnie Moore's men struggled to create the opportunities necessary to halve the deficit en route to a comeback, and Wolves held on to secure a comfortable win and leapfrog Orient in the process.
