Wolverhampton Wanderers 'leading race for £10m Mexico defender Edson Alvarez'

Wolverhampton Wanderers are reportedly leading the race to sign Club America's highly-rated 21-year-old Mexico defender Edson Alvarez.

Wolverhampton Wanderers are in pole position to beat off Premier League competition and capture versatile Mexican Edson Alvarez for a fee of around £10m, according to a report.

Centre-back Alvarez, who can also play at right-back and in midfield, has earned 23 caps for Mexico at the age of just 21, becoming the youngest member of his country's squad at the 2018 World Cup.

Juan Carlos Osorio, who gave Alvarez his international debut against Iceland in 2017, praised the youngster's composure, strength and assuredness in possession - qualities understood to have attracted the attention of Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo.

According to Record, Wolves have made the "best financial package" for Alvarez to Club America, who finished fifth in Mexico's Liga MX last season.

The report says that West Ham United are also keen to secure Alvarez's services, and suggests further interest from Dutch sides PSV Eindhoven and Ajax, who could sway their target with the prospect of Champions League football.

Alvarez has been linked to Wolves throughout the summer and any deal is likely to progress now that the defender has returned from helping Mexico to a triumphant Gold Cup campaign.
