Fernando Alonso expressed his relief at finally ending Ferrari's wait for a pole position in qualifying at the British Grand Prix.

Fernando Alonso has admitted that he was thrilled to finally end Ferrari's two-year wait for pole position at the British Grand Prix.

Alonso was fastest in qualifying at Silverstone and secured his and Ferrari's first pole since the Singapore Grand Prix of 2010.

The Spaniard declared being back at the front of the grid was a relief for him and his team.

"I'm happy to be on pole after nearly two years," he said. "It was not easy. To complete a lap with no huge mistakes is not easy in these conditions.

"It was tricky conditions for everyone. You have to be calm in some difficult moments, for visibility it was important to be on pole."

Alonso will be trying to match his impressive qualifying performance during the race on Sunday at Silverstone.
